Brazilian carnivals and Carnival in Rio de Janeiro

Brazil is considered the country of carnivals, in many of its cities held their own carnivals, but one of the world’s best known and most spectacular is, of course, the carnival in Rio de Janeiro. This Grand event is held in the month of February, but as it is, we learn from this article. Brazilian carnival (Carnaval do Brasil) is an annual festival held in many cities of Brazil for 40 days before Easter, which marks the beginning of lent. During lent, Catholics abstain from all bodily pleasures. That is why the Brazilian carnival, as an act of farewell to the pleasures, held on the eve of lent.

There are several versions of the origin of the Brazilian carnival. One of them is that it is based on introduced in the 17th century by the Portuguese “the Funny day” – feast, accompanied with singing and dancing, when it was decided to bullshit each other all sorts of ways, pour water, obidyatsya raw eggs and beans. Soon the fun was joined by black slaves brought to Brazil from Africa, bringing back the colorful customs from their homeland. By the 20th century Brazilian carnival has absorbed elements of carnivals in Italy and France. It was then that mask, fantastic costumes and characters came on Brazilian holiday. Also have a regional variation of the carnival.

In 1928 in Rio appeared first school of Samba dance and since then the tradition of carnival parades of the Samba schools has spread to other cities. The biggest parades of the Samba schools is the carnival in Rio and the carnival in Sao Paulo. In these cities there are special sambadrome where actually happen and the performances of the Samba schools, admission is paid back (but all the marches, of course, free).

However, the tradition of street carnivals, in which all can participate who wants to, has not disappeared today. It is preserved mainly in the northeast of Brazil, in the cities of Salvador, Recife and Olinda. Hundreds of thousands of people take to the street to walk along the roads of the city, to dance, sing, party and have fun. In these cities, the parades are not only the rhythms of Samba, for example in Recife and Olinda – the rhythms of Maracatu, afosi and frevo.

Brazilian Carnival is the largest festival of the country and the most famous holiday in Brazil. At the time of the meeting, life in the country is totally freezes, the holiday is celebrated by day and by night, 50% of the annual consumption of beer accounts for this period and 70% of tourists come to Brazil at this time.

The carnival in Rio de Janeiro is held every year in the month of February (the height of the Brazilian summer). The festival starts in preceding Lent Saturday and lasts for 4 days and 4 nights before Ash Wednesday (Quarta-feira de cinzas).

Organized this festival with the participation of the Ministry of Tourism and the League of Samba Schools and was broadcast almost all TV channels.

The carnival begins with the symbolic transfer of city mayor of keys from Rio de Janeiro “the king of carnival”, which at the time of the festival becomes the rightful owner of the city.

The main feature of the carnival in Rio de Janeiro, that this is not an impromptu procession with dancing and singing, and well-rehearsed pageantry of the competition of Samba schools, in which from each school involved to 4,000 people at a time.

Each Samba school for a year very carefully preparing for this holiday, everything is thought out to the smallest details, select the topic, preparing the music and the choreography, created unique costumes and executed a moving platform.

Forty members of the jury will rate each item: team spirit, the rhythm of the drums and the consistency of their dancing and singing, and, of course, the overall impression.

One of the most important persons during the March school – woman-bearer, who heads the machine, and the evaluation also depends on her performance.

Every day, more than two million people participate in the carnival on the streets, but the main carnival procession takes place in the Sambódromo – special 700 metre street intended for carnival, with stands and boxes, designed for 90,000 spectators. The parade of Samba schools at the sambodrome begins in the evening at 21 and can last for 10 hours.

First the Sambadrome is the school-winner of last year’s carnival, and then the rest of the school go on the list. First sneaked the name of the school, then go to its employees and celebrities in fancy dress, followed by thousands of dancers and musicians, as well as brightly-decorated platform on wheels, around which dance elite dancers “assists”.

Co-run Samba schools Parade of Champions, which will be defined by the competent jury. According to the results of the carnival selected school – the winner of which is awarded a cash prize.
